RCMP Toys for the North Toys arrived at the RCMP hangar in Happy Valley-Goose Bay via military transport plane from Trenton, Ontario on December 13 and were wrapped the following day. They will be delivered to several communities in Labrador. RCMP members, Santa and Safety Bear visited communities and dropped off the donated gifts to children. The toys were donated the Canadian Toy Association. |

Remembrance Day Ceremony On November 11, 2012, a parade of mounted officers, the CLB band, and various divisions of military units and cadets assembled at the National War Memorial to observe the Last Post and two minutes of silence. Wreaths were placed at the monument by representatives from many groups, from the Royal Canadian Legion and Veterans Canada, to Scouts and Girl Guides. Premier Kathy Dunderdale and the Lieutenant Governor John Crosbie also laid wreaths. |

Order of Newfoundland and Labrador Ceremony Eight people were inducted into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador in a ceremony at Government House in St. John's on October 16, 2012.
The five women and three men named as recipients are considered to be leaders who excel in their respective fields. This year's recipients are Janet Cox, Frieda Faour, John (Jack) Ford, Mary Dyer Gordon, Constance Howley, Captain Sidney Hynes, and Susan (Fran) Williams. The order of Newfoundland and Labrador is the highest honour this province bestows.

Kruzenshtern Tall Ship Visits St. John's One of the largest tall ships in the world, the Russian vessel the Kruzenshtern, sailed into the Narrows on October 15, 2012. The four-masted tall-ship visited St. John's with 100 cadets and 50 crew to participate in the International Association of World Maritime Universities Conference, hosted by the Marine Institute. The ship, which is 85 years old, last visited St. John's in 2009.

Alan Doyle Films in Iceland Alan Doyle has wrapped up shooting of the second single off his first solo album 'Boy on Bridge'. The Great Big Sea frontman was in Iceland last week to film the music video for 'Testify', which he co-wrote with friend and Robin Hood co-star Russell Crowe. The pair had three gigs on Saturday alone. They were joined onstage by Patti Smith who sang 'Because the Night'.

Long-time VOCM Broadcaster Dies Elmer Harris died on Monday, January 3, 2010, at the age of 71. Harris was the first Newfoundlander elected as the national president of the Radio Television News Directors Association of Canada, and was also a recipient of the association's Lifetime Achievement Award. |
