I am beyond disgusted and upset that people at that age would do something like this!! Enough is Enough this has to STOP NOW! Something has to be done to them that would scare the living daylights out of them and make them realize that what they did was WRONG!! Can you imagine what those punks would teach their children! Show their faces to the public! Lets see how tuff they would be then. What goes around comes around...as they say Karma is a B!^$#

Children using 'protection laws' to their advantage :
Child Youth & Services can be blamed for what is happening in our society today. Parents are powerless, as are teachers, or anyone else that would have imposed consequences for kids gone astray. Kids use the system to threaten parents and teachers and their word is considered 'the truth'. Give back the right to disciplining children and perhaps we may have a better society. When parents can give up their kids, the government pays for someone else to care for them, then gives them a free cab to visit them we know the system is not working. Send a journalist to speak to a cab driver and you will get a good picture of a system out of control and fully abused!

Disgusted and Appauled :
I can hardly even bare to read this story, it disturbs me so much. What this poor man must have went through and it will most likely affect him for the rest of his life. It's high time that our justice system change and work for the poor innocent victims, rather than the offenders. There is no doubt in my mind, that these barbaric individuals be tried as adults. If they are capable of this, they are capable of anything. And to say that it isn't the fault of the parents, well...let's just say that I find that hard to believe. All or most of the young people today will do the normal things that kids do growing up but many are brought up to respect others. And I think that completely stems from the parents. I have 2 younger boys and I can guarantee anyone that they have respect and care for other individuals and when they see anyone being bullied that breaks their heart. They have compassion for others. I think it totally starts in the home and I would be willing to guess that the parents of these young people are probably the type of parents that go away to their cabins etc. for the weekends and leave their kids alone at home and probably don't keep tabs on where they are. Again, this disgraceful act just burns me up and they should completely throw the book at them and put them through their paces.

Please don't place blame on the parents.....As parents we raise our children to the best of our ability....Some kids go astray and others end up outstanding citizens.

This is so scary. I cant get this young man out of my head & to think that people can blame the parents is nuts. I hope these people get what they deserve.

Confused :
Why does everyone keep blaming the parents of these kids ? Okay yes you need to have strict consequences for when your kids do wrong , but you cannot bar them in the house 24/7 . Growing up my mom was a social worker , needless to say if I so much as came home late or smelled of cigarettes I was grounded for 1-2 weeks, not aloud out, no phone, no computer, no anything besides eat sleep and school ! However this never stopped me from making my own choices and I had a few run ins with the cops . It just goes to show that it is not always the way you are raised , you could have the best most supportive parents in the world who love you and teach and guide you but everyone has their own mind and makes their own choices weather or not their parents have taught them the difference . Leave the parents alone . I do agree however to trying them as adults because as I said every one makes their own choices , they chose to hurt a disabled man, now they should have consequences that are appropriate !

Maybe it's time to put their names in public lower the age limitation for public awareness to age 12. place them under house arrest, use ankle chains so that they are ashamed to be seen in public that might make them think twice before doing something that would become an embarressment

Outraged. :
This is absolutely disgusting. I live in Mount Pearl and my brother is physically disabled. It makes me sick to think that there are people like this in our community. These teens should be tried as adults. Attacking and robbing this disabled man was obviously well calculated. Clearly the disabled man did not provoke the attack in any way at all... Bunch of psychos. I'm sure they will all get off with a slap on the wrist though - if that. Then they'll be back on the streets to hurt more innocent, vulnerable people. What a joke our criminal justice system is.

Not the fault of the parents !!! :
For those of u who like to blame the parents in the this it is not the case. I happen to know oneof the teens involved and comes from a very good family with strong values and very hard working parents !!! unfortunately no matter how u raise your kids these days and what teach them its the kids that make the choices as they no that there will be no price to pay because of our great system....time to stop putting the blame on the parents and change the young offender act!!!

I feel that these monsters should be tried as adults, they certainly knew what they were doing to bring this young gentleman into a secluded area. If the justice system could think of this incident as say "fishing out of season" or poaching the sentence would be much harsher. Someone who poaches etc. has everything but there children taken from them, and a horrible crime like this, goes with a slap on the wrist. They should be sentenced as adults along with there names published, forget protecting them, if these animals want to do crimes that so called adults commit, then treat them like adults, and forget protecting them, this is what is wrong with out justice system.

There is no consequences for the young people( I would like to use adults but not applicable)in today's society. When I grew up if you did something like this it would be safer for the RNC to take you to the lockup rather than bring you home to your parents. With the young offenders act(joke) what are the punishments-- 3 years in jail out in 3 months. Force these animals to stand in the mall with a sign that says, " Look at me I beat up people with disabilities, I am so cool" I think that they should be charged as adults, if found guilty charge them as such.

Sad, angry and disgusted parent :
I am sad, angry & disgusted that this could happen to this young man. I live in the same community as he does and do not know him or his family personally, but do know that they are a good respectable family and this young man is a kind & gentle man, as I did meet him before and have heard lots about him. Most likely, this situation will affect him for the rest of his life and he will be fearful going out on his own in the future as this should not have happened to him. I would also like to bet that these parents are "Dead Beat Parents" I put full blame on the parents of these kids because being a parent, I started to teach my kids to be kind to others, especially disabled people, and taught them right from wrong at a very young age and if they ever performed such a violent crime against an innocent individual who could not protect themselves, I would make sure that they would pay for it for a very long time after. I cannot even imagine my child being a bi-stander without trying to stop this, so all involved are guilty, as far as I am concerned. The Justice system should treat these kids as adults in this case. What are they going to be like when they are adults and the crimes get worse? Unless they pay for their crimes now they will be our future major criminals. Child bullies usually turn into adult bullies and the crime rate in this province is high enough now. I think that the parents of these children should also pay for their childrens crimes. The childrens names and the parents names should be made public. I hope that the Police take this all the way and that charges are laid against these kids, and that they pay big time for their crime. God bless this young man and his family.

Not a slap on the wrist and a revolving door on the way out of court so you can go repeat the offence or crime for the 17th time. Most law abiding citizens have no rights while the convicts and criminals have them all.. Wake up Wake Up Wake Up... We now have the oil flowing in, and all the problems to go with it. Good luck people in staying safe out there. Or just become a criminal, then u seem to be protected well.... Just my 2 Cents. Wait even thats gone up. 5c now......

When I heard Police Chief Johston express his digust at five youth beating and robbing an disabled man, I was appalled. What on earth is our society becoming when a disabled person is attacked by a gang of young thugs. If I had my way, I would: 1. Sent those animals to boot camp. 2. Hold parents responsible for those thugs and make them compensate this disable man that was attacked and robbed. 3. Bring in a citywide curfew to get youth off the streets. 4. Get tough on crime laws that allows youth who do such awful stuff be punished as adults. 5. Overall the court system that is too lax on young criminals and these thugs should get the maximum punishment deserved. Finally, I hope this disable man that was assaulted considers suing those thugs to hold them accountable for thier actions and answere for their deeds.

These criminals should be shamed publicly. They should have there identity splashed all over the news so everyone knows how hateful, hurtful and ignorant they are. They should be made stand on a corner with a sign around their neck stating their crimes, for all to see. I don't care if they are young offenders or not. That's the problem today, there are no consequences for your actions. A letter of apology and a slap on the wrist and they are free to keep on commiting crimes. Just enough brains to be dangerous. These kids will be the dregs of society. Those with a sense of entitlement and forever a drain on the system. If they were my kids they would be punished and to hell with child and youth services. No beating but I gaurantee they would not see TV, Computer, ipod, Ipad, Xbox, Playstation or the outside world for months plus they would be doing community services for years with disabled people and any other punishement I could think of. Shame on them and anyone who turns a blind eye to this.

There are more than a handful out there Mr. Kent. I know, I have a child with a physical disability. Try taking her to the Mall or the Regatta and there are "Adults" who won't even move out of her way. You wouldn't know but their getting around the lake is more important than moving out of her way. You need to live this life to know how it feels. I live it everyday and people need more education.

you can blame the parents or education system all you want but the truth is child youth and family services and children advocate which do not allow us as parents to punish our children or the law to set a sentencing as they deserve, me as a parent would never allow my children to do any kind of bullying of any sort, as a grand parent of a disabled child i would never stop until justice is served (LEGALLY) but I'm sure the parents are feeling awful but they are not to blame for what these teens decided to do.

You know reading down through all these comments I have to say I agree with everyone of them. Please bring back the control to the parents, bring back spanking. An awful lot of those kids out there getting in trouble are so looking for attention and not getting it at home because the parents are out there working their behinds off in order to have those big huge homes and what for they don't have enough time or energy for the children. A good swat on the behind never hurt anyone, and yes they should be made an example off, make them stand for the public to see and make them go out and clean up the garbage that they throw around, you know they just may be happy that someone is paying attention to their cries for help. And yes..... the military is the right answer it might make good men and women out of them. Shame Shame on you....

I think this is absolutely disgusting and the ones who saw fit to do this should be charged as adults. It's a sad sad world when those who may be the weakest in regards to mental or physical challenges are victimized in our society . I think in some cases the parents can be held somewhat responsible but in saying that I think we as a society are more accountable when we let out government and so called professionals tell us how we should raise out kids , we take religion out of schools , we spare the rod and spoil the child and that is in the bible , and yes there were children who were abused but by going to the other extreme of having parents of all people afraid to punish their kids as they see fit ,isn't the answer and it hasn't stopped the abuse in our society but what it has done is made a childs'world where they know they can get away with just about anything because all authority figures hands are tied , parents teachers, police officers whom i'm sure would love to have more power when it comes to these kids , we are the ones to blame collectively , we cry out about the cruelty to animals and God forbid you should be a smoker you're looked at with disdain by doctors and even refused treatment in some cases but we sit back and thanks to our so called law makers and government we give these animal and others like them full reign because they have nothing to fear . Yes send them off to the army , bootcamps , and if they can do the crime let them do the time as ADULTS and give the parents back control without living in fear if they raise their hands to their kids they will have child protection at their door accusing them of child abuse , I think unless we come together as one then things like this and worse will continue to happen .

The days are long gone where a parent would deal with such a situation and you could be certain it would not happen again. Oh! let me back up. Something like that would not happen back then because the kids knew what would happen to them when they got home. The justice system for young people is a joke. you read about youth in the courts some 40-80 charges and they get out scott free. An adult will appear for something that should not have happened like uttering a threat, no history of this type of behaviour before and will spend time in jail or some severe reprecussions. NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!! Something has to be done!!! Where is the justice minister on this one????

If these criminals are not tried as adults it will be an embarrassment to this province and it's people. If the justice system fails us in this, then it is our duty as citizens to petition the government so that the people are heard. Whether the victim was physically disabled or not is irrelevant, really. This type of swarm attack reflects the lack of fear that youth have of the justice system. Time to put that fear back.

Blame it on whomever but somewhere along the way these individuals were not instilled with good morals. What does it mean anymore to say a person comes from a good home. The criteria has changed. Affluence seems to have become the deciding factor as opposed to strong moral upright values. In our quest to make sure our kids "have it better then we did" we've lost control of what really matters. Children are placed in day care or with sitters until they're considered old enough to care for themselves when they get off the school bus. Family time at best for most families these days is limited to those hours parents spend carting their kids to and from various evening and weekend extra cirricular activities etc. Long gone are the days when cohesive family units spent quiet times around the home, leisurely meal times and good quality time together. Call a spade a spade: We're not making a better world for our kids!
As for punishment for this crime: There is a model that could work. Instead of wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to rehabilitate these types in our justice system send them off to the military. yes I'm serious. They should have no further choice in a career path of anykind. Promptly at the age of 17 they should be enrolled in the armed forces, trained as combat soldiers with mandatory deployment to an active war zone. These people who assaulted an innocent disabled person have demonstrated thier ability to plan a covert operational attack. Put it to good use on the battle front. In the process it would probably make decent men out of an otherwise bunch of cowards.

As goes for trying to discipline these kids the law doesnt allow parents to do their job anymore and it is disgusting. Kids know too much and know they will get away with this kind of behavior. I have never hit my child but I have put the fear of god in the child with the threat of a good old fashion belt spanking. Many teenagers are committing these types of crimes only reason this one is in the news is because the person was disabled, no one heard about the one recently on commonwealth ave in mt pearl when an adult was jumped by a few teenagers and his sneakers stolen. Or the teenager that goes around "paddling" people and when the police is called about him they know his name before you even speak. THey do it cause they can get away with it. It is a sad day indeed when we have to be afraid of teenagers!

John :
surely these kids will hide behind the young offenders act and slaps on the wrists will be given all around. if so all this shows to the youth of this city is that you are not considered fully accountable for your actions until you are 18 and older. I am sure Parents and personal backgrounds of these kids will be put to blame when they get their day in court, but the plain and simple fact is that the individual makes the decision to hurt or harm someone else, blaming others for your actions dose not help or solve anything, it just pushes blame to someone or something else.
PS. When did our youth become more and more entitled and why do they feel as if everything is someone else's problem or responsibility? Poor Jimmy & Jane are told that they cannot do no wrong because telling them otherwise would hurt their self esteem then they go to school where they cannot fail for cheating and not handing in assignments on time and by the time they are old enough to work they do no realize that they are self adsorbed and selfish people with a poor work ethic until their boss dragged them in the office and says "Sorry Jim/Jane your fired, you don't do any work and blame everyone else for your poor actions."
-just a thought

Well :
Why can't kids these days just get a friggin' job? I played hockey, fought a lot on the ice, been in fights off the ice. Never in my life hasd it ever crossed my mind to beat up anyone and rob them. These youths need some serious time in corrections. There is no place for this in our society.

Annette :
This was not a childish prank it was a planned, well excuted, organized crime. It was an adult action so the punishment should befit the crime. I know each parent is blaming the other kids for getting their little angel into trouble but this was too serious to let it slide.

Disgusted :
You know when you read about an incident like this you get sick to your stomach. My heart goes out to this young man and what he encountered. Good on the police to get these disgusting youths and now we will see what happens when they get to court. Enough with the progressive discipline, these kids should get serious crime. Lets take back our neighborhoods before its too late!

Patty :
This is very frightening...I can't even let my teens go to a movie without worrying sick about whether they may get beat up on the way out! Kids are let away with way too much these days with no consequences for their actions! Parents need to take a stand and start parenting in alot of these cases. Teach the kids the meaning of kindness and caring by showing them...we are the role models for the youth and they will never learn if they are allowed to do what they want all the time. omg.....:o(

Concerned :
these youth have way more issues than beating someone up. they must be terribly disturbed individuals. You only need one ringleader to have many followers. WHERE ARE THE PARENTS!!!!.Bet they will be home tonite in their cozy beds while this young man has to deal with the fallout of this idiotic event.Time to change law so that violent crime by youth is treated the same as if they were adults.

slap scum bags like this on the wrist and let em go home, thatll teach em!!
this is a mortal sin...

Wicked :
They should have a sign hung around their neck saying what they did and forced to stand at an intersection in their community.

100% the parents' fault! Bad parents should not have kids if they don't know how to raise them.

OH my :
Their Momas must be so proud of the job they have done raising these kids

Al :
This is a very disturbing story.I hope the victim has a speedy recovery. Now,I realize that these teenagers won't get punished because of their ages and their lawyers. However in a case like this I would like to see the parents take some responsibility for the actions of their kids.

Sad day :
In big centers, assault and robberies on the disabled, and elderly are more frequent than one would think. By some of our lowest life-forms, they are considered easy targets. There needs to be a separate highly harsh penalty for animals that commit such socially abhorred crime.

No Justice :
We don't have a justice system that protects the innocent. Five idiots will appear in court today and be sent home and on the streets again. The kids today got too much control. No disipline allowed. Time to change that and let parents and teachers take control of those young punks. Saucy kids makes me sick.Wild animals got more respect for us than what is out there walking the streets. Unreal.

MEP :
This story makes me so sick to the stomach I want to throw up. Who are the parents of these little criminals, how in God's name were they raised, how in their little uneducated ignorant minds did they think it was okay to lure a disabled human being and then beat and rob him. Can you imagine what they will be like when they reach adulthood. Then they will be up on murder charges. All schools should be talking about this story this morning with the students. Teach them how wrong and immoral this violent crime was.

Tracy :
Very disturbing and hope they get a long sentence so the can think everyday about why they are there..but as for blaming the parents people need to stop and realize that its not always the parents to blame for these types of situations. Some of these kids come from the best of families don't kid yourself and if you think any different your are just being naive.

Darrell :
This is a terrible crime, totally disgusting. One talks the young man to go in the woods with him, the others waiting for him, it was a planned attack, they knew what they were doing so no matter their ages you do the crime you pay the time if not they may do it again to someone else. Treat them as adults in court, if not they will get a slap on the wrist and say never do it again and say your sorry, big deal.

Well you know the law can't be too hard on them because those idiots have their rights according to Society of today. What sort of Society has been created! They should be taken in plain view and whipped! Shame of them! The parents did a wonderful job raising them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anna :
Please don't insult animals by comparing them to these monsters. With our soft justice system, nothing will happen to them and they know it.

Its Worse its Getting :
These are 14 year olds where r their parents??when i was 14 i had to be home before dark what is wrong with people these days and to pick a disabled person..parents should be ashamed of themselfs. This is awful and its worse its getting. PARENTS KEEP YOUR KIDS UNDER CONTROL AT 14 U SHOULDNT BE WALKING THE STREETS ALL HOURS OF THE NIGHT AND BEATING PEOPLE UP TO STEAL THERE MONEY BUT SOME PARENTS ARE JUST AS BAD AS THE KIDS SO CHILDREN SEE CHILDREN DO.

lowest of the low disgusting pieces of trash. An eye for an eye, they need to feel the same pain or worse. Scum, pure waste of lives.

James :
Why do I get the feeling that this won't be their last time in court, and my not be their first either. I would be so ashamed if I found out my child did something as despicable like this. While the children should certainly be held accountable for their actions (i.e. youth corrections, jail time) the parents are just as much to blame. The facts that your child see no consequences for their actions is ridiculous. Now the justice system has to teach them that (or at least try), something that if the parents had of done years ago, this disgusting crime of attacking another human with a disability could have been avoided. Senseless crimes involving youth are on the rise, I don't believe that the children are getting worse, the parents are. And now its on us the tax payer to try and get YOUR kids back on the right track. But then again, procreation doesn't require a license.

Kat :
This is actually ridiculous. Do these teenagers not have parents? If they do they're failing at parenting. To do that to anyone, mental disability or not, is just outrageous and shouldn't be tolerated at all. How tough are they to gang up on a mentally disabled person. They're real cool... Said no one ever.
Posted: 10/1/2012 9:35:07 AM
Dave :
Absolutely ridiculous. I am currently listening to open line as I write this and we are already making the excuse that "they are children" and how harshly can we punish them? Well, as children you need to be shown the difference between right and wrong. So the message should be sent loud and clear right now.....this is outrageous and there is no excuse for this type of behavior regardless your age!!

Anon :
Cowards...each and every one of them...talk about an imbalance of power...4 against 1...premeditated...and a person with a disability at that. How disgusting and shameful.

Who raised them? :
Dont blame this on the parents. It is society who raises kids these days. They are spoiled by law. They are not allowed to be told they are not good enough, they are not allowed to fail and they are not allowed to be punished because it is someone else's fault.
We have a generation of kids out there who dont have to try, everything is handed to them and they have this false sense of accomplishment and reality.
Our generation grew up knowing that if we messed up then when we got home we were going to get it. Now if kids mess up then know that when they get home well....they cant watch Tv or play video games? Cause sure as hell as they deserve a smack theres a social worker out there is just waiting to take the kids away.
We have changed so much to make our world better for ours kids.....but has it really been made better? Cause everything sure is alot worse.
So dont blame parents, it is society as a whole who is responsible for such deviance.

RDJ :
This crime was obviously premeditated with the clear intention of luring a disabled individual for the purposes of beating and robbing him. 5 on 1 is a huge disadvantage for most people and I'm sure the extent of the beating was unnecessary for the purpose of robbing this guy so they had to take some amount of joy in the crime. It's disgusting really and this should definitely warrant these little brats being charged as adults. Anything less than incarceration, even if for a short time to give them a taste of the path down which they are headed, is not enough of a punishment.
Sadly, these monsters will probably just get probation and orders to stay away from one another... none of which they'll follow.

Wince :
Nothing's going to happen. They'll be back on the street once the court house nanny's are done.
There's no justice anymore.

Just sickening!
But, with our system, they will probably get probation.

Donna :
This is so sad and disturbing...that poor young man...I agree that more needs to be done on how our justice system treats these crimes and the criminals who commit them..there pictures should be shown and there parents held accountable, who raises a child to be so cruel? Especially to some poor soul who already has so many challenges to face in this life...such a sad story and I wonder the life long implications for the young man who endured the attack? What a terrible crime indeed!
