I did the exact same thing last month. I too followed the well flagged and groomed trail which turned out to be a skidoo or hunting trail. Thankfully I had a GPS because when I ran out of flags, the groomed trail was long gone, the fog rolled in, and I too would have been forced to spend the night. I got back to where I went astray and realized I had to actually move some branches to see where the ECT continued on from the Spout.

Agree with previous posters. It has been a few years since I've walked the spout hike and trail markings were bad then. A couple of instances we walked off the beaten path without realizing it. Glad they were found safe.

Happy to hear you were found safe and sound. Enjoy the rest of your time visiting here in our province. There should me a lot more signs up that way and in other places that people hike, hopefully the government will do something about it.

Everybody, there are done valid points here but remember, the east coast trails assoc work very hard to mark out, create and maintain the east coast trails on very little budget! No, I am not a member or have any affiliation to the ECTA, but they can only do so much with very little money. Don't forget the cost of fixing many portions after the 09 hurricane. I'm sure the govt must put some money into the trails, but some additional aid could go a long way to avoid things like this situation.

I actually hiked the Spout last weekend and we followed the map from The East Coast Trails Association. We started at Bay Bulls and came out at on Shoal Bay Road. A bit more signage would have been helpful to confirm we were on the right track, but the map was sufficient.

The exact same thing happened to us. The spout itself is not even marked! There is a sign that says, "campground" with the arrow pointing to what we now figure must have been a skidoo trail (we hiked 4 km out of the way before figuring this out!)

No wonder they got lost.I did the Spout hike last Friday and was blown away regarding the absolute lack of signage.There is a place where the path forks but no sign to indicate the correct path. The money that police and rescue services consume saving people should be put into helping people not get lost in the first place.
